Raymond C. K. Chan Professor of Neuropsychology and Applied Cognitive Neuroscience, Principal Investigator

Neuropsychopathology of psychotic disorders and identification of endophenotypes/biomarkers for these clinical groups such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorders

Study of neuropsychological performances along the continuum of psychosis

Application of social cognitive neuroscience (social psychology, cognitive sciences, neuropsychology) to the development of clinical assessment and intervention for psychotic disorders and at-risk individuals

Measurement issues in clinical practice (e.g., development and validation of ecological valid test of neuropsychological performance, and articulating the laboratory-based test results to everyday life performance)

The lab focuses on neural mechanisms of psychological disorders, especially those related to learning and memory, and affects and emotion. We believe that pathological learning and memory (neural plasticity) and/or abnormal emotion circuits underly most of psychological disorders.
For nearly two decades, we have studied opiate addiction in animal models and extented to human studies recently. In the past few years, we also branched out to look at depression from a learning-and-memory/affective angle.
Techniques
We routinely employ behavioral paradigms, pharmacological intervention, biochemical analyses, and molecular and cellular assays. Electrophysiological recording and in vivo imaging system are in process of setting up. In addition, we have access to fMRI and other equiment in the North complex of CAS.
Current Projects
Neural mechanisms of addiction: memory reconsolidation and epigenetics, affective memory, reward system, cognitive control and affective decision-making.
Neural mechanisms of depression: behavioral models of depression in tree shrews (lower primate) and rats, and pharmacological studies of antidepressants.
Effects of prenatal exposure of abusive drugs and mechanisms.

My research interests focus on psycho-neuro-immunological mechanisms of stress and related psychiatric disorders. In my lab, multiple techniques, including behavior, genetic and epigenetic, molecular biology and electrophysiology, are used to elucidate how environmental factors, especially early adverse experiences, cause emotional and cognitive dysfunction, and the relationships with the pathogenesis and treatment of psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD, etc. My group and collaborators have published over 70 papers in this broad field, most relating to animal research as well as part studies in humans. In recent years, our work has continually been funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the National Key Technology Research and Development Program of China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Institute of Psychology, and CAS Key Laboratory of Mental Health.
