Professor David Shum from the Griffith Institute for Health and Medical Research was invited by Professor Raymond Chan for a 2-week (April 13th – 27th 2009) visit to the Neuropsychology and Applied Cognitive Neuroscience (NACN) Laboratory, and Key Laboratory of Mental Health. This visit was sponsored by the Agreement of the Exchanges for 2009/2010 between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Australian Academy of Sciences.
Professor David Shum is the Deputy Director of the Griffith Institute for Health and Medical Research and the Director of the Behavioural Basis of Health Research Programme.
Professor David Shum is the founding and current Director of the Applied Cognitive Neuroscience Research Centre (established 2003) at Griffith University. He has more than 20 years of experience in studying the effects of brain injury on human cognition. By using state of the art neuropsychological assessment techniques on individuals with brain injury, he has contributed to the understanding of the nature of cognitive impairments in these individuals. Overall, Professor Shum has published 2 books, 2 book chapters, 1 psychological test, and 58 refereed journal articles. His research has been cited over 400 times.
The main purpose for Professor Shum’s visit was to facilitate and strengthen the recently established collaboration with Professor Raymond Chan and his team in the Institute of Psychology. In particular, Professors Shum and Chan, and their teams will commend more concrete work on developmental cognitive neurosciences.
During his visit, Professor Shum has taken part in the symposium for developmental cognitive neurosciences held at the Institute of Psychology. He has introduced the infra structure and research progress of the Griffith Institute for Health and Medical Research, and his team’s current studies. Participants of this symposium included experts from the areas of cognitive neuroscience and developmental psychology such as Prof. Yanjie Su from Peking University, Prof. Buxin Han, Prof. Juan Li, and Prof. Raymond Chan etc.
