Associate Professor Annie Y. Tsai Visiting the Institute of Psychology

On January 5th, 2010, Dr. Annie Y. Tsai ,Associate Professor  from Department of Psychology, Azusa Pacific University visited the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, after the invitation of Associate Professor Zhiyan Chen. Dr. Annie Y. Tsai delivered a talk in the Institute of Psychology, which satisfied a large group of audience containing scientists and students from the Institute of Psychology including Professor Kan Zhang,Professor Erping Wang,Instructor Zhuyuan Liang,Instructor Yuan Zhou,Instructor Yan Sun. Professor Shu Li chaired the talk session.

Dr. Annie Y. Tsai who is was the second-generation Chinese-American scholar graduated from Stanford University.Hazel Markus and Robert Zajonc are her teachers. She participated in Albert Bandura and Philip Zimbardo’s classes.Her primary areas of research are social and cultural psychology.

The topic of Dr. Annie Y. Tsai ’s talk was “Equality or Propriety: A Cultural Models Approach to Understanding Social Hierarchy”. She described experiments about A Cultural Models Approach to Understanding Social Hierarchy.The experimental results show the difference between Asian-American students and white students.She believes that this cultural difference is subject to the impact of family education.An eager discussion was held after the talk.

The aim of this visit was to further understand Chinese culture,and to discuss the influence on psychological and behavioral consequences from culture with researchers of the Institute of Psychology. From this communication, researchers of the Institute of Psychology have a new understanding of Social Hierarchy through the exchange of Dr. Annie Y. Tsa.
