Professor John Abela from the Department of Psychology of the Rutgers University visited the Neuropsychology and Applied Cognitive Neuroscience (NACN) Laboratory of the Institute of Psychology during Jan 18th-21st 2010. The main purpose of this visit was to facilitate and strengthen the recently established collaboration between his lab and the NACN Lab after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Rutgers University and Institute of Psychology in 2008. Prof. Abela is a professor of psychology at Rutgers University, and received his training in clinical psychology in University of Pennsylvania. His main area of research interest focuses on cognitive vulnerability to depression in children and adolescents. One of his recent projects involves the longitudinal follow up of at-risk adolescents. Prof. Abela has discussed and explored the possibilities of collaboration with the NACN Lab members, and shared his expertise in longitudinal data analysis with us. He also delivered a talk to the institute on cognitive and interpersonal vulnerability to depression in children of affectively-ill parents. During this visit, Prof. Abela has strengthened the collaborative work between him and Dr. Raymond Chan in various areas including coping flexibility and its efficacy in college students and the prospective longitudinal study on at-risk groups. Moreover, they will also explore further on the interplay of genetic, cognitive, and interpersonal vulnerability to depression in adolescents.
