From May 26th to May 30th, 2010, Dr. Keith Rayner, the Director of the Rayner Eyetracking Lab, the Atkinson Professor of Psychology at the University of California, San Diego, USA, and the Editor (2004-2010) of Psychological Review, visited the Institute of Psychology, after the invitation of Professor Xingshan, Li. Professor Rayner delivered a lecture in the Institute of Psychology on May 27th, which attracted scientists and students from different research groups.
The title of Professor Rayner's lecture was "Eye Movements and Cognitive Processes in Reading". Professor Rayner’s lecture focused on the question "Can eye movement be used to examine on-line language processing?". Firstly, he described some of the eye movement paradigms that he invented, which are widely used today in reading studies. Then, he introduced some recent findings from researches on reading, and presented his own model on eye movement control during reading (the E-Z Reader Model). Finally, Professor Rayner drew a conclusion that eye movement could be used to study on-line language processing. Professor Kan Zhang, the Director of the Institute, issued the Certification of invited talk to Professor Rayner, and had a cordial talk and further discussion with Professor Rayner after the lecture.
Professor Rayner has published more than 300 research articles in journals such as Science, Psychological Review, Cognitive Psychology, Psychological Science, Journal of Experimental Psychology etc. This is his first visit to our Institute of Psychology. During the visit, Dr. Li, Dr. Wu, Dr. Chan. etc exchanged information about some of their ongoing projects with Professor Rayner. They further explored future collaboration possibility on research on eye movements and some cross-culture issues.
