A team of psychologists led by Professor David Shum from Griffith University and Griffith Health Institute was invited by Dr. Raymond Chan for a weeklong visit (May 23rd – 28th 2010) at the Neuropsychology and Applied Cognitive Neuroscience (NACN) Laboratory, and Key Laboratory of Mental Health. The team members from Griffith University included Professor David Shum and Drs. Glenda Andrews and Tim Cutmore. The main purpose of this visit was to facilitate and strengthen the recently established collaboration between Professor Shum and Dr. Chan’s team. The visit is also a follow up of the recently signed MOU between Griffith University, Institute of Psychology and Yuanpei College of Peking University.

Professor David Shum is the Deputy Director of the Griffith Institute for Health and Medical Research and the Director of the Behavioural Basis of Health Research Programme. He is also the founding Director of Applied Cognitive Neuroscience Research Centre (established 2003) at Griffith University. He has more than 20 years of experience in studying the effects of brain injury on human cognition. Dr. Andrews is a developmental cognitive psychologist specialized in relational complex theory and executive function in children. Dr. Cutmore is a cognitive scientist specialized in EEG and ERP methodologies.

During the visit, researchers from the two organizations took part in the 2nd Symposium of Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience held on May 25th at the Institute of Psychology. The first symposium was held in Beijing in May 2009. Participants of the 2nd symposium included Professor David Shum, Drs. Glenda Andrews, Tim Cutmore, Raymond Chan, Wang Ya, Li Xuebing, Huang Jia, and Wang Kui. Each participant presented their current work around the topic of developmental cognitive neuroscience, focusing on ERP and imaging research. Professor Shum and his colleagues all agreed that it was a great experience and success. They found the presentations at the symposium interesting and stimulating and have identified a number of direction for joint research between the two research teams. Furthermore, they believe that this visit will extend and strengthen the rapidly growing collaboration between Griffith University and NACN Lab on developmental cognitive neurosciences.

On May 26th, the Australian visitors and Dr. Raymond Chan visited Professor Yanjie Su’s laboratory at Peking University and met up with her postgraduates there. Dr. Glenda Andrews also presented her work on relational complex theory in typically developing children.
