Abstract: Signal detection theory is an essential tool in behavioral research, in both experimental design and data analysis. In this presentation, I will cover the fundamentals in signal detection theory, including yes-no, rating, and forced choice tasks. I will also cover the topics of ROC (receiver operating characteristic) and when signal and noise distributions are Gaussian but with unequal variances. The goal of this presentation is to teach students and researchers who are unfamiliar with signal detection theory, so that the material covered will suffice to meet most people’s research needs.
